Silicon carbide (SiC) tubular membranes

Ceramic tubular membranes are applied in a cross-flow filtration mode to treat the effluent of different industrial processes removing suspended particulate matter, oils and large biological structures like bacteria. These advanced ceramic membranes are manufactured as tubular multi-channel membranes operating in an inside-out filtration mode. By tailoring the membrane properties like pore size and channel geometry the membrane characteristic can be adapted to the specific application specific requirements. Due to the tubular geometry and the cross-flow operation principle this kind of membrane is well suited for demanding industrial application with high dirt loads, aggressive process media and demanding physical conditions. The process media is in a confined space during filtration avoiding contamination by the surrounding or exposure of the operator to harmful substances.

How do tubular membranes work?

Ceramic tubular membranes are operated in a cross-flow filtration mode. The dirty process water flows inside the tubular membrane channel with a defined velocity, keeping the dirt particles in suspension and limiting membrane fouling. By applying an overpressure inside the channels compared to the outer space of the membrane water if forced to permeate though the membrane pores leaving the membranes at the outer membrane shell as clean permeate. The suspended solids and oils are retained on by the inner membrane surface forming a concentrate enriched with these substances.

Filtration with tubular membranes is a highly efficient and space-saving solution compared to traditional clarifying filter systems, generating a permeater with unmatched quality.
