Background

With around 86,000 inhabitants in 12 affiliated municipalities, ARA Region Biel AG is the third-largest wastewater treatment plant of around 60 wastewater treatment plants in the canton of Berne. It treats around 20,000,000 m3 of wastewater annually and removes around 1,200 tons of residual materials.

Before the purified wastewater flows into the River Aare, it passes through several purification stages in 24-hour operation.

Process

After primary treatment, the wastewater from the ARA Biel region undergoes bioremediation and is then fed to the secondary clarifier. The medium is then passed through a self-cleaning backwash filter from BOLLFILTER and treated to produce process water.

Therefore BOLLFILTER

Based on all the technical process parameters, the BOLLFILTER experts at Matter Hydraulik have identified the aquaBoll® 6.18.3 in size 419 with DN200 flange connection as the most suitable filter for the ARA Biel region. The comprehensive customizability of the components used and the high-quality parts enable application solutions that lead to optimized plant operation in every configuration.

The aquaBoll® serves as the final mechanical treatment for the secondary clarification water to remove particles so that, for example, the COD value for the return to open waters can be maintained. The resulting process water is reused for various applications within the wastewater treatment plant.
